Education and Career
I’m a graduate from the School of Computing & Information Science at the University of Guelph. My time as a student at Guelph was fantastic, the experience here involved a nice mix of social and technical challenges, most memorably a group of 11 students with different schedules and ideas coming together to code a game in Java in a single semester.
CIS at Guelph placed an emphasis on language agnosticism; so over the years I’ve worked in C, Java, Python, Perl, C++, JavaScript, PHP. At some points there was even some TCL/TK and shell scripting in the mix.
After my last exam I dropped off a resume with Computing & Communications Services, and shortly after got hired on as a PHP developer.
Since mid-2010 I’ve been learning about Oracle databases and the RAD tool APEX which we’ve used at an ambitious scale to replace a legacy Employee Records system written in Speedware. My main contributions to the team are a solid understanding of HTML and JavaScript, along with a dogged commitment to using version control.
Why the Blog?
My co-workers have valued me sharing what I learn, so I thought it would be good to be more active in the community, and share some of my experiences here.
I’m no expert, but maybe something I post here will someday help somebody :)
